Built in 1972, The Exeter Library serves as the main library space for the Phillips Exeter Academy, who wanted a library space and commissioned Kahn to design it. Kahn was an architect based in Philadelphia, whose style included heavy buildings that emphasized their weight, and is considered to be one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. Kahn met their desires to have brick exteriors to match the rest of the school and an ideal environment for studying. He employed contrast (as seen in the circles intersected by straight lines), pattern and repetition due to the repeated use of these circles along 4 sides, symmetry within the space, and hierarchy through the drawing of the eye to the “X” ceiling. The openness allows for people to understand the plan from entrance.

I used Micron Pens on vellum paper for the final presentation. I used resources from the architectural library on campus in order to find drawings of the building, as well as to ensure scales were as accurate as possible. I had never used Rhino before (having focused on SketchUp in past models), so I was excited to learn it because it is utilized heavily in the field. I created the two Rhino renderings so I could enhance my skills through further use and also help emphasize the parti. I chose the inside entrance area as my parti because it was crucial in Kahn's design, and something that I didn't want to get lost in the model. His use of light and shapes was very important to the space, so I used this as my guiding point.
